Croatian Phrasebook for Expats: What You Actually Need

Living in Croatia brings repeated conversations: collecting a parcel, explaining a problem, buying groceries and greeting neighbours. Build your phrase list around those recurring tasks. You do not need to prepare for every possible conversation at once.

Start with three phrases that help almost anywhere

• Još učim hrvatski. — I am still learning Croatian.
• Možete li ponoviti, molim vas? — Could you repeat that, please?
• Možete li mi to napisati? — Could you write that down for me?

Use these when a reply is too fast or contains an unfamiliar word. They help you keep an exchange going without pretending you understood.

1. Ordering and paying

• Jednu kavu s mlijekom, molim. — One coffee with milk, please.
• Mogu li platiti karticom? — Can I pay by card?
• Platit ću gotovinom. — I will pay in cash.
• Račun, molim. — The bill, please.

2. Doctor and pharmacy visits

• Imam termin u deset sati. — I have an appointment at ten.
• Boli me ovdje. — It hurts here.
• Ovaj lijek uzimam redovito. — I take this medicine regularly.
• Možete li mi objasniti upute? — Could you explain the instructions to me?

Prepare medicine names and important information in writing. If instructions are unclear, ask the clinician or pharmacist to explain them. Continue with phrases for the doctor and phrases for the pharmacy.

3. Neighbours and housing

• Ja sam vaš novi susjed / vaša nova susjeda. — I am your new neighbour.
• Oprostite zbog buke. — Sorry about the noise.
• Ne radi grijanje. — The heating is not working.
• Može li netko doći to popraviti? — Can someone come to fix it?

4. Parcels and the post office

• Želim podići paket. — I would like to collect a parcel.
• Imam obavijest o pošiljci. — I have a delivery notice.
• Trebam li nešto platiti? — Do I need to pay anything?

5. Transport and appointments

• Jednu kartu, molim. — One ticket, please.
• Kada polazi autobus? — When does the bus leave?
• Koji dokumenti su potrebni? — Which documents are needed?
• Gdje mogu predati zahtjev? — Where can I submit the application?

Use the public transport guide for tickets and routes. For official procedures, confirm requirements with the responsible office; a phrase list helps with language, not with deciding which documents your situation requires.
