Lj and nj are Croatian letters written with two characters. In words such as ljeto (summer) and knjiga (book), each represents one consonant sound. Learn to recognise the pair as a unit before reading the whole word.
English “lli” in “million” and “ny” in “canyon” can be rough starting points, depending on your accent. They are not exact pronunciation instructions. Use a Croatian speaker or recording to hear the target sound.
Lj: start with ljeto and ljubav
Lj is a palatal sound: the tongue works against the hard palate, the firm part of the roof of your mouth. Try blending an l-like sound with the tongue position you use for English y. Then compare the result with a Croatian model; avoid a separate, strongly pronounced y after the l.
- ljeto (summer)
- ljubav (love)
- prijatelj (friend)
- bolje (better)
Volim ljeto. (I love summer.)
Ovo je moj prijatelj. (This is my friend.)
Danas je bolje. (It is better today.)
In prijatelj, keep the final lj. Do not add another vowel or syllable after it. Start with the single word and then place it at the end of the sentence.
Nj: start with njega and knjiga
Nj is also palatal, but it is nasal: air passes through the nose. A blended n-and-y starting point may help, but aim for the single Croatian consonant you hear. Do not pronounce the two written characters as separate letter names.
- njegov (his, masculine singular form)
- Njemačka (Germany)
- knjiga (book)
- konj (horse)
Ovo je njegova knjiga. (This is his book.)
To je konj. (That is a horse.)
The final nj in konj needs the same attention as the initial sound in njegov.
Read the right pair of letters
Look closely at ljeto and mlijeko (milk). Ljeto contains lj. Mlijeko contains l followed by i and j; it is not an example of the digraph lj. Spotting the actual spelling keeps your practice focused.
Avoid using regional words as examples of “bad Croatian”. Family or local forms may differ from the standard language. When practising a standard sound, choose a consistent standard model and keep a separate note of local forms you hear.
A four-word practice sequence
- Listen to ljeto, prijatelj, knjiga, konj while reading.
- Repeat after the recording, leaving a short pause between words.
- Record the same four words and check whether you added an extra vowel at the end.
- Say Volim ljeto. and Ovo je njegova knjiga.
- Repeat the phrases later without looking at the page.
If a word is difficult, isolate the target sound with its neighbouring vowel, then return to the whole word. Do not force speed. A short, clear attempt is more useful than repeatedly rushing the same mistake.
