Croatian for Family Conversations: Phrases and a First Call

By Sanja Perinić Švorinić · Croatian language expert and creator of Calm Croatian

You can bring Croatian into a family call before you can hold the whole conversation in Croatian. Start with a greeting, one question and one sentence about yourself. Choose a relative or partner who will give you time to answer.

These examples work for heritage learners and complete beginners. If you already understand family conversations but struggle to reply, read the guide for heritage learners alongside the practice below.

Ask for a little space to practise

Želim malo vježbati hrvatski s tobom. (I want to practise a little Croatian with you.)
Možeš li govoriti malo sporije? (Could you speak a little more slowly?)
Molim te, daj mi malo vremena. (Please give me a little time.)

Agree on a short part of the call in Croatian. Ask for one useful correction at the end, if that helps you. Switching languages when you need to is fine; you can return to your chosen Croatian phrase afterwards.

Start and end a call warmly

  • Bok, bako! Kako si? (Hi, Grandma! How are you?)
  • Bok, djede! (Hi, Grandpa!)
  • Drago mi je da te čujem. (It is lovely to hear you.)
  • Nedostaješ mi. (I miss you, to one person.)
  • Nedostajete mi. (I miss you, to more than one person or using polite address.)
  • Čujemo se uskoro. (Talk to you soon.)
  • Pozdravi sve kod kuće. (Say hello to everyone at home.)

In direct address, baka becomes bako and djed becomes djede. Use the name or family form your relative prefers. Families may use regional words and nicknames that differ from a textbook.

Ask a question that invites a short answer

  • Što radiš danas? (What are you doing today?)
  • Kako je prošao dan? (How was the day?)
  • Što kuhaš? (What are you cooking?)
  • Kakvo je vrijeme? (What is the weather like?)
  • Kako su svi kod kuće? (How is everyone at home?)

Prepare your own answer too: Danas radim. (I am working today.) Kod nas pada kiša. (It is raining here.) Za vikend se odmaram. (I am resting at the weekend.) This makes the exchange a conversation instead of a list of questions.

A short first-call script

You: Bok, bako! Drago mi je da te čujem. (Hi, Grandma! It is lovely to hear you.)
Grandma: I meni. Kako si? (Me too. How are you?)
You: Dobro, hvala. Danas radim. A ti? (Fine, thanks. I am working today. And you?)
Grandma: Kuham ručak. (I am cooking lunch.)
You: Što kuhaš? (What are you cooking?)
Grandma: Juhu. (Soup.)
You: Baš lijepo! Čujemo se uskoro. (How lovely! Talk soon.)

The real answer may be longer. If you lose the thread, use Možeš li ponoviti? (Could you repeat?) or Što znači ta riječ? (What does that word mean?). Ask your relative to write down one phrase you want to remember.

At the family table

  • Jako je ukusno. (It is very tasty.)
  • Mogu li dobiti još malo? (Could I have a little more?)
  • Hvala, dosta mi je. (Thanks, I have had enough.)
  • Kako se ovo zove? (What is this called?)
  • Možeš li mi poslati recept? (Could you send me the recipe?)

Learn the names of dishes your family actually makes. For a longer conversation, bring a photograph and ask Tko je na slici? (Who is in the picture?) or Gdje je ovo? (Where is this?). You do not need to understand an entire family history in one sitting.

Build a routine around the next call

Before the call, choose three phrases and say them aloud. During the call, use at least one and ask one follow-up question. Afterwards, write down a phrase you heard and want to use next time. Repeat the same opening until it feels familiar, then add a new topic.

Measure a concrete change: Did you ask without reading? Did you understand the answer? Did you stay in Croatian for one extra exchange? For a repeatable schedule, see daily Croatian practice ideas.

The Roadmap below provides a written practice routine and a 30-day plan. It can support this habit; it does not include family conversation recordings or personal feedback.
