Start learning Croatian with one small task each day. This seven-day plan gives you a manageable first week: a few sounds, useful greetings, short sentences and a prepared conversation. Repeat a day when you need more time; the plan is a practice schedule, not a promise of a language level.
For the wider learning path, see the complete beginner’s guide. Here, the aim is to help you start using a little Croatian today.
Day 1: greet someone and introduce yourself
Dobar dan. — Good day.
Bok. — Hi, informally.
Ja sam Ana. — I am Ana.
Drago mi je. — Nice to meet you.
Replace Ana with your name. Say your introduction aloud, then try it without reading. See everyday Croatian greetings for formal and informal situations.
Day 2: connect letters with sounds
Use the Croatian alphabet guide to learn the 30 letters. Start with c, j, š, ž, č, ć, dž, đ, lj and nj. Listen to a recording or a Croatian speaker alongside the written examples. English sound hints are approximate.
Choose five useful words, such as kava (coffee), voda (water), čaj (tea), kuća (house) and hvala (thank you). Repeat the whole word, not just its letters.
Day 3: prepare a coffee order
Jednu kavu, molim. — One coffee, please.
Jedan čaj, molim. — One tea, please.
Ne, hvala. — No, thank you.
Practise hearing Još nešto? (Anything else?) and replying. The endings in these phrases differ, so learn each checked phrase as a unit. Continue with ordering coffee in Croatian.
Day 4: build three sentences about your life
Učim hrvatski. — I am learning Croatian.
Živim u Londonu. — I live in London.
Imam psa. — I have a dog.
Choose sentences that are true for you. If you change a place or noun, check the new form rather than copying the same ending everywhere. Use basic grammar to understand the pattern.
Day 5: learn to ask for help
Ne razumijem. — I do not understand.
Možete li ponoviti? — Could you repeat that?
Možete li govoriti sporije? — Could you speak more slowly?
These phrases are part of speaking, not a sign that you have failed. Practise one after a question you find hard to understand.
Day 6: rehearse one short exchange
You: Dobar dan. Jednu kavu, molim.
Other person: Još nešto?
You: Ne, hvala.
Read both roles, then cover your lines. Ask a willing speaker to help or record yourself. A real reply may be different, so keep yesterday’s clarification phrases ready.
Day 7: review before adding more
- Can you introduce yourself without reading?
- Can you order one drink?
- Can you ask someone to repeat?
- Which word or sound still needs practice?
Repeat the most useful task next week and add one new situation. See daily Croatian practice for a routine you can continue.
